Video Slide Show Services PDF Print E-mail

A DVD slide show is an excellent way to honor an event or person.  I particularly like savoring children's milestones during their growth journey.  Some that I have enjoyed doing include:

You simply provide the photos (prints or digital), music, and give me an idea of how you'd like it arranged. Video clips can be included as well.  I will bring your static images to life and use my experience to communicate the essence of your message or event.

Your photo memory slideshow will be provided on a DVD to be played on a standard or wide-screen TV.  ImageOr you can choose other formats such as iPod, Play Station, YouTube or an executable file to run on your PC.  It is an ideal way to share your event with friends and relatives.

If you are located near Portland Oregon, you may want me to take pictures for you to include in your video album. I don't claim to be a professional photographer, rather an advanced amateur with a photo journalist style. My digital camera is ideal for capturing both stills and video.

It may be that your needs can be met with one of the free Internet services.  Here are some I would recommend where you can create your own content for sharing on the Internet:

1.  Flickr.com (part of Yahoo!) 

2.  Picasa Web Albums (part of Google) 

3.  Shutterfly.com (publicly traded corporation) 

4.  PhotoBucket.com (part of Fox Interactive Media)

Bush presidency to endYesterday (Sunday, January 20th) was a feel-good hump day. There is now less than one year remaining of the disastrous Bush presidency.

As my wife and I are making plans to travel to Europe in a couple of months, we are pondering how to apologize to those we meet for the stupid actions made in the name of America.

I hope we can start to rebuild the moral and ethical reputation that America has lost because of the Bush years.

Back In Kindergarten - A Refresher Course PDF Print E-mail

Back To SchoolAfter a hiatus of more than 6 decades, I found myself back in kindergarten this week. It was my first full week as a ParaEducator substitute for Portland Public Schools at Meriwether Lewis Elementary, Room 1, where Mrs. Parks was called 'teacher'. I was the other adult present. The children called me 'Day.'

It might be more accurate to say that there were 25 five-year-old teachers channeling wisdom to 2 adults.
 
My primary responsibility was to help a sweet but disruptive little girl stay on track and get through her day. She had a 4-syllable name which took some effort for her to write at the top of each paper. I will honor her privacy by using an alias of 'Dulcinea' (from Man of La Mancha ). Sometimes Dulcinea believed she was more of an 'Aldonza.'

Being there was both fun and profound. The classroom landscape was rich in possibility and unpredictable. I hadn't realized that a return to the basics would be so refreshing. Remember Robert Fulghum's 1990 book All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten? His top 10 things were all there:
  1. Share everything.
  2. Play fair.
  3. Don't hit people.
  4. Put things back where you found them.
  5. Clean up your own mess.
  6. Don't take things that aren't yours.
  7. Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
  8. Wash your hands before you eat.
  9. Flush.
  10. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Pretty good reminders for those of us in business or government too.

Life Is Not The Cup. Life Is The Coffee. PDF Print E-mail

This week I finally decided to step into something new. Not retirement, exactly. More like changing my container.

Then, my brother sent this story to me. Jack is not prone to forward cute email fluff. Maybe one per year, if that often. Timing was perfect and reinforced my decision to risk the new.

    "A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, were talking at a reunion and decided to go visit their old university professor, now retired. During their visit the conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in their work and lives.

    Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups -porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite, telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

    When all the alumni had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said:

    "Notice that all the nice looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink.

    What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup; but you consciously went for the best cups... and then you began eyeing each other's cups. Now consider this: Life is the coffee; your job, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life.

    The type of cup one has does not define, nor change the quality of life a person lives. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee.

    The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.

    Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

    Enjoy your coffee!"

ImageWith more than 70 million blogs and 100 million MySpace sites, why another one?
Well, it is a virtual extension of self that is one of the last bastions of free speech that isn't controlled by the 6 media companies.   The old "Why am I here?" puzzler may find expression in this space.  Maybe other Tooleys will join in.
I am interested in a number of causes. Among them:
But none of these matter if we do not urgently address the issue of global warming. Solving this problem will take the efforts of everyone from all points on the political, religious and scientific spectrum.

Al Gore, thank God, isn’t president. Instead, he may make a real and lasting difference following his passion for the planet.
